Madwomen
Music by Patrick Burns
Lyrics by Patricia Zehentmayr
Book by Marian Partee

Madwomen is a daring new musical that reimagines history through the eyes of women labeled “mad.” After a suicide attempt, bipolar songwriter Hannah finds herself in a psychiatric hospital with some of history’s most misunderstood women—Vivien Leigh, Zelda Fitzgerald, Camille Claudel, Mary Todd Lincoln, and Juana “La Loca” of Castile.

When Mary is tasked with leading group therapy in the doctor’s absence, she encourages the patients to role-play the famous men who shaped their lives. These men—whether husbands, lovers, or artistic rivals—both inspired and overshadowed them. As Hannah’s pop star boyfriend enters the mix, the women grapple with the tangled web of love, admiration, envy, and erasure.

With the help of one another, and an unexpected ghost, the women begin to find healing, voice, and power. Blending contemporary songwriting with historical resonance, Madwomen gives voice to the brilliance of women too often dismissed as unstable, unworthy, or forgotten.
